Architectural Tours of Historic Downtown Buffalo

If you would like to sign up in advance for the Queen City Tour, Queen City Highlights Tour, or City Hall Tour, please contact msa13@buffalo.edu so that we can make sure there will be adequate space for interested parties. Depending on numbers of people involved, MSA may also be able to arrange for slightly cheaper rates.

“Queen City Tour” (2 hours)
Take a two-hour walking tour of Buffalo’s downtown core and see early examples of American commercial architecture. Buffalo offers a living museum of architectural history told through the works of Frank Lloyd Wright, Louis Sullivan, H. H. Richardson, Daniel Burnham, McKim, Mead and White, and Eliel and Eero Saarinen. New York Times architecture critic Nicolai Ouroussoff has praised Buffalo’s “rich tradition of architectural experimentation.” Landmarks like The Guaranty Building, a gloriously ornamented steel skyscraper, and Ellicott Square, the largest office complex in the world when it was built in 1896, join architectural beauties like Buffalo’s City Hall, with its colored terra cotta in Native American patterns, as part of this tour.

12:30-2:30 (2-hour) Thursday, October 6; departs promptly at 12:30 from the lobby of the Hyatt Regency, with Denise Prince, Graduate student, Visual Studies Department, Professor of Mathematics, Erie Community College & tour guide for Preservation Buffalo Niagara.
