This panel will ask in what ways modernist magazines have been able to contribute to social and political activism? One avenue through which print culture might enable activism is via the networks of individuals that it engenders (to draw on the conference's theme of "networks"). This panel will also investigate other ways that magazines might engage in activism. By examining case studies, the panel will begin to try and address the question of how efficacious print culture can be in effecting change? Also of interest is the question of whether the conditions of possibility for such activism changed through the 20th century and/or in varying locations, or if they remained fairly constant. Therefore, of particular interest will be papers that span a range of time periods and geographic locations.
