Call for Papers ArchiveModernity marks the advent of sophisticated medical techniques designed to isolate and anticipate local and global epidemiological threats. But the concepts of immunity and contagion go beyond medical categories of health and disease to structure historical and contemporary understandings of what it means to be a subject in the modern world. This panel will consider literary and artistic representations and cultural instances of immunity and contagion and their role in the construction of modernist subjectivity.
Papers might address contagion theory, local and global health strategies (e.g., technologies such as vaccination, quarantine, and GIS mapping), affect theory, infrastructure (e.g., sewer systems, housing), technology, finance, and other topics. Please send a 300-word abstract and a CV by April 25 to Elizabeth Covington, firstname.lastname@example.org.
