MSA Board Policy on Affiliation

The Modernist Studies Association welcomes opportunities to cooperate with national or international scholarly organizations that have similar missions in the field of modernist studies, broadly defined. We encourage the development of a network of national/international scholarly associations in the field of modernist studies and anticipate that such affiliations will enable greater diversity of disciplines and interdisciplines in modernist studies as well as greater geographical scope. The purpose of such affiliations is to develop a network of associations in modernist studies that enhances communication of scholarly and pedagogical work; shares information about association activities; makes conference announcements and calls for papers available; establishes links on web sites and information about membership options, listservs, and other social media activity; provides information about publication possibilities; facilitates advertisement trades; suggests opportunities for collaborative work; and enhances the international and interdisciplinary diversity of conferences and related activities in modernist studies.

Eligibility
• Share the goals and purposes of the Modernist Studies Association;
• Be independent, non-profit organization, at least two years old;
• Have a national or international constituency;
• Have a majority of members who are professional scholars or teachers;
• Support free inquiry and critical examination;
• Act in a manner consistent with policies of nondiscrimination, harassment, and professional standards.

Application for Affiliate Status
An officer of the organization seeking affiliate status with MSA should send an application to the President of MSA.

Application should include:
• the mission of the organization, including range of interests;
• web site address;
• list of current officers and by-laws of the organization;
• characterization of its membership;
• activities typically sponsors or plans to sponsor.

The President of MSA presents the application for affiliate status to the MSA Board. A majority vote of the Board is required for approval.

Practices: Affiliate Members at MSA Conferences
• Members of affiliate organizations are encouraged to use MSA resources and participate in MSA conferences.
• Participation in MSA conferences requires people from affiliate organizations to become members of MSA.
• Affiliate members are encouraged but not required to identify their proposals for MSA panels, roundtables, or seminars as generated from the affiliate organization.
• Affiliate organizations may but are not required to issue a call for proposals that will then be submitted to the MSA Program Committee as part of MSA’s regular submission procedures.
• The MSA Program Committee encourages inclusion of proposals from affiliate organizations on the conference program. However, affiliate organizations will not be given an automatic slot in the MSA program.

Practices: Information Sharing
• The web sites of MSA and affiliate organizations will provide links to each other’s organizations. The MSA Web Master should be provided with links of affiliate organizations and will provide the MSA link to affiliates.
• Conferences calls for papers will be distributed to all member organizations.
• Board members of affiliate organizations are encouraged to attend conferences and events of affiliate organizations when possible. They should identify themselves to President and/or organizer of the hosting event and encourage sharing of information about their organizations and other issues in the field.
